UK drivers don't understand hands-free law
A survey carried out on behalf of Halfords shows that UK motorists don't understand the new hands-free mobile phone law. Just under half of all drivers surveyed were currently ignoring the ban, yet a third of drivers mistakenly believed that all mobile phone use was banned in cars.

Mobile phone popularity continues
The BBC has its almost inevitable annual story about the number of text messages sent on New Year's Eve: 111 million were sent in the 24 hours from midnight on 31st December 2003. It also quotes a Body Shop survey claiming that around 750,000 old mobiles will have been discarded over Christmas.

WAP is here to stay
Despite over-promising and under-delivering in 1999, it seems that the mobile internet promised by WAP technology is gaining popularity. Services including Vodafone live! and O2 Active led to 897 million WAP pages being seen in the UK during November 2003.

Converting text messages to speech
BT is currently trialling a service that will convert text messages to speech, enabling them to be delivered to fixed-line phones. The synthesized voice will even convert a 'smiley' :-) into a laugh.
