The BBC has reminded us that it's now 20 years since the first conventional 'direct dial' mobile phone call was made in the UK, although it's worth pointing out that mobile phone services had been available in the UK since the late 1950s.

Text donation to tsunami aid
The Disasters Emergency Committee has set up a text donation number for anyone with a mobile phone connected to a UK network. Customers can make a £1.50 donation to the tsunami earthquake appeal by texting DONATE to 83321. All the money will be received by DEC with no deductions by the mobile networks and no VAT deducted.

The ever-increasing number of text messages sent on New Year's Eve is becoming part of the 'traditional' celebration for many people. The BBC reports that 133 million texts were sent across the UK in the first 24 hours of 2005.
