Mobiles pose risk to aircraft

Just when it's starting to look as though mobile phone usage may be permitted on aircraft under certain circumstances, research from the USA shows that using a mobile can interfere with on-board electronics, including location devices.

There are a couple of apparently conflicting reports on Telecoms.com today. One survey says that mobile TV isn't popular with consumers yet, while another report claims that it's expected to hit 'mass market' in a couple of years.

A long-running legal battle that threatened to shut down many BlackBerry users in the USA has now been resolved, with RIM - the manufacturer of BlackBerry email devices - agreeing to pay around £349 million to software company NTP.

Watching Mobile TV at home

Mobile network O2 has expressed surprise that many people trialling the company's Mobile TV service were watching TV programmes on their phone whilst at home. EETimes.com quotes O2's Mobile TV Strategy Manager as saying that people liked having a TV they could easily move from room to room... although cynics might suggest the triallists were simply 'playing' with the service because it was available.

Mobile viruses getting smarter

The prospect of mobile phones being threatened by computer viruses is getting closer. Most viruses need to be 'installed' by the unwitting user, but a virus that can 'jump' from a PC to a PDA or smartphone has now been discovered. There's also news of malicious software that targets the popular Java operating system used by many mobile phones.

High street retailer The Link is to sell easyMobile phones - previously the company's SIM cards and handsets had only been available online.
