New Vodafone data rates take effect
Tech.co.uk and ZDNet have both reported on Vodafone's new charges for data usage, which took effect on 1st June. There's now a £1 maximum flat rate for most UK data services, along with a £7.50 monthly option for 120MB.

Google explains mobile strategy
Google's CEO Eric Schmidt says his company's mobile strategy is focussed on building software for handsets and a mobile platform to help other software developers The Wall Street Journal says it looks as though we should expect the equivalent of a Google operating system for mobile phones. Meanwhile, Google has announced that its 'Checkout' payment service is now available on mobiles as well as conventional web browsers.

Handset sales up 14% worldwide
2007 started well for mobile manufacturers, according to research company Gartner. They say that 257.4 million handsets were sold worldwide in the first three months of this year, which is a 14% increase from the same period last year. Annual sales are expected to hit 1.15 billion units by the end of December.

Apple iPhone to launch on 29th June
The Apple iPhone will be launched in the USA on 29th June, reports the BBC. The date was given in a series of TV advertisements shown in the US on Sunday. No firm European launch date has been confirmed yet, although the company has previously said the phone will be available by the end of 2007.

T-Mobile launches mobile TV service
T-Mobile is launching its mobile phone TV service in the UK with nine channels, including Channel 4, ITN, MTV and Eurosport. It's reported that the BBC and Sky are also talking to the network. The service will be £1 a day for existing customers and free for new customers until the end of June, when a new charging structure will be introduced. [Sources: NMA and T-Mobile]

Mobile data used in hunt for Madeleine McCann
The Guardian reports that the Metropolitan Police's top digital analysis expert is helping Portuguese police investigate the disappearance of Madeleine McCann by checking mobile phone data from the area she was last seen in. It's expected that the data will be used to check inconsistencies in evidence given by anyone interviewed by police.
